On the Right Track: New models for integrated transport
Published by the New Local Government Network - supported by Bircham Dyson Bell LLP, ATKINS and Yorkshire Forward.
Bircham Dyson Bell was pleased to co-sponsor a major new research project and resulting report by the New Local Government Network (NLGN) examining the opportunities available for delivering new and effective models of governance for integrated transport.
The project was an opportunity to examine critically the transport, sub-regional and economic development agendas, building on the achievements of the Local Transport Act 2008 and the potential of the Local Democracy, Economic Development and Construction Bill, which is currently being considered by the House of Commons.
The challenges of the current economic situation for both the public and private sectors make this even more important and NLGN have come up with some challenging ideas to take forward. Many of these issues are now being addressed in the Department for Communities and Local Government's own July 2009 consultation document, Strengthening Local Democracy.
The NLGN project complements the work that Bircham Dyson Bell did with Centre for Cities in 2008 on the On the Move report, which clearly made the case for greater integration of transport to deliver economic growth and prosperity in British cities (available here). The Centre for Cities report strongly made the case for ‘why’ – this report from the NLGN suggests ‘how’.
